The first step in participating in a distance learning program is to select the school that you wish to virtually attend. By choosing a board certified school, you can be certain that the money you spend on getting your degree is put to good use. Board certified distance learning degrees hold the same amount of sway as a college or university that you attend in person. The structure of distance learning programs are more individualized, however, as the timing can be mostly selected by each of the students. If you choose to enroll in group courses, however, you can expect to have to present yourself online for group lectures. In same cases, there are variances in costs for group versus individual courses online, which is left to the discretion of the school you are considering attending.
Once you have selected the school, you will need to make certain you have all of the materials required for the class. In some cases, the school provides scanned copies of the books and reading material that you need. However, you may need to purchase books from the school for your distance learning program. Before you pay for any courses, find out how much extra your course materials will cost. This is determined by the school, and can vary school to school and program to program.
If you have already participated in some standard college courses, it may be possible to transfer your credits to your new distance learning program. However, this is dependent on the school you wish to learn from. There may also be options to acquire credits through taking crediting exams. These exams are significantly cheaper than taking the course over again if the credits cannot be transferred.
